You are 

Summer Access Worker.  You will report directly to the Program Manager, Recreation, Leisure and Accessible Sport  You will provide support in areas of social integration and personal care to assigned consumers, at Residential Camp, All Abilities Day Camp, Community Day Camp, and Deaf and hard of hearing camp.  Summer Access staff is responsible for the general welfare; safety, health and well-being of assigned consumer(s) and will assist with various areas of program delivery when required.

The term employment will start in June and end in August.

Ideal Candidate:

  • University degree in social science, nursing, education or relevant field, including or a combination of 1-4 years of directly related experience and education
  • Experience with and willing to assist consumer with activities of daily living (dressing, feeding, mobility, transferring, washroom)
  • Experience and knowledge working with individuals with disabilities
  • Residential Camp/Day Camp experience preferably in the role of camp counselor/integration coordinator
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with sensitivity and empathy to diversity
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team
  • Have flexibility to work varied hours including, overnights, weekends, evenings and days
  • Current standing in Basic First Aid and CPR required
  • Non-violent Crisis intervention or WEVAS an asset
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to own vehicle
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of ASL, Deaf culture and French an asset

 

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for direct (“hands on”) support and or verbal encouragement to consumers while participating in summer leisure, recreation and life-skill programs.
  • Responsible for providing direct hands on and or verbal support to consumer with varying degrees of complexity in activities of daily living.
  • Responsible to provide direct supervision to consumer while attending overnight/day camp/Independence for youth.
  • Establish a respectful relationship with consumer (s).
  • Assist camper to engage in cooperative group play and activities.
  • Assess environment and camper to determine consumer’s level of independence.
  • Provides specialized training to participants (interpreter/life-skills).
  • Provide Supervisor with a summary report of ongoing activities and progress.
  • Communicate with families regarding needs and or behaviors of your assigned consumer(s).
  • Must be adherent to and compliant to confidential information, including privacy legislation and all other policies and procedures of governing bodies.
  • Establish professional working relationships with camp employees, associated programs and organizations.
  • Document all incidents/accidents that occur and report them immediately to the direct supervisor.
  • Adhere to the guidelines of Leisure and Recreation, as well as the policies and procedures of Manitoba Possible.
  • Assist the Recreation Facilitator and/or Recreation Coordinator with various areas of program delivery when required.

A Recreation Facilitator – Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Recreation Facilitator is responsible for the development and implementation of the Manitoba Possible Recreation, Leisure, and Accessible Sport programs for Deaf and hard of hearing children and youth. This includes ensuring accessible and inclusive programming that enhances independence. In addition, the Recreation Facilitator provides day-to-day directions and support to a team of Recreation Assistants, Summer Access Workers, and volunteers.

Ideal Candidate:

  • University degree in or enrolled in Recreation Studies or a related field. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Extensive knowledge of program planning in recreation and leisure with an emphasis on programming for Deaf and hard of hearing children and youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of Deaf culture is required.
  • 2 years of experience working with large groups of diverse people, preferably in a leadership role or having supervisory responsibilities.
  • Experience providing Activities of Daily Living. ADLs may include but are not limited to helping someone dress, eat and drink, use the washroom, and with other personal hygiene needs, etc.
  • Knowledge of accessible sports or willingness to learn and try playing them.
  • Knowledge of accessibility and disability topics and issues.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience making presentations in public.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Ability to solve problems and adapt to changes quickly.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with MS Office and online platforms.
  • Ability to lift and move objects of approximately 10 to 30 lbs.
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle for work is an asset.
  • Ability to work different shifts including daytime, week-ends, and evenings.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate recreation, leisure, and accessible sport programming for Deaf and hard of hearing children and youth.
  • Provide direction and support to Recreation Assistants, Summer Access Workers, and volunteers.
  • Assist the Program Manager recruit, train, and evaluate program staff.
  • Evaluate program eligibility and understand client needs to ensure programming is accessible, inclusive, and suitable.
  • Collaborate with referring agents and service providers to guide them on recreation, leisure, and accessible sport opportunities available at Manitoba Possible and within the broader community.
  • Promote recreation, leisure, and accessible sport programs.
  • Regularly responsible for direct support to clients in Activities of Daily Living (ADL). ADLs may include but are not limited to helping someone dress, eat and drink, use the washroom, and with other personal hygiene need, etc.
  • Identify needs and gaps in service related to recreation, leisure, and accessible sport programming for Deaf and hard of hearing children and youth.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with other organizations and stakeholders; make presentations, participate on committees, and more.
  • Arrange transportation for clients to attend programs, as required.
  • Transport program equipment to program locations in and around Winnipeg.
  • Keep accurate and up to date records for client files and program reporting requirements.
  • Provide feedback on policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for handling registration fees, preparing receipts, and making deposits.
  • Adhere to all Manitoba Possible policies and guidelines.
